WHEN DOES YOUR BUSINESS NEED TRADEMARK PROTECTION?
The following is a list of types of businesses, which should consider registering portions of their corporate name, trade name or product names as trademarks.
Seventy percent of all registered marks are words (block letters), twenty percent are stylized words (distinctive typeface or gentle design), while only ten percent are pure designs (logos). The following examples address the need to register word marks as this is the largest neglected area.
ASSOCIATIONS:
. . . a body of persons uniting together for some special purpose or business.

Many business organizations, unions and professional associations have established a set of standards, which their members are obligated to maintain. Such associations pride themselves on their standards and encourage members of the public to deal with association members. The names
(and logos) are registerable as Certification Marks as they denote a standard of excellence that the member users of the association must meet in order to maintain membership.
The public, upon viewing the mark, will know that the
service provider has met the defined standard and, therefore, can be trusted.
