WHEN DOES YOUR BUSINESS NEED TRADEMARK PROTECTION?
The following is a list of types of businesses, which should consider registering portions of their corporate name, trade name or product names as trademarks.
Seventy percent of all registered marks are words (block letters), twenty percent are stylized words (distinctive typeface or gentle design), while only ten percent are pure designs (logos). The following examples address the need to register word marks as this is the largest neglected area.
IMPORTERS:
. . . the act of bringing goods and merchandise into a country from a foreign country.

Companies that take the time to source and secure U.S. marketing rights to a product that has never been sold or made known in a foreign territory must spend money to promote the BRAND NAME as used abroad to generate goodwill for this new product. Importers should protect their investment in the goodwill associated with the product with a registered trademark; the importer must also protect against the exporter deciding to sell products direct.
